Proposed Floorplan

Mr. D.H. completed a floorplan with our proposed changes. Here are the two side by side (click on it to enlarge).

The proposed plan adds 3'3" to the back of the house. This would be used to create a hallway off the utility room to the master wing, add closet space to the corner bedroom (and an AC closet), and enlarge the utility room. Here's a second proposal which would add a screened porch to the back of the house (under the same roof line). We would love to have that, if the site is large enough, but I'm not altogether sure how I feel about the length that would add to the house.

  1. Neat project!! I LIKE the style of the house.

None of my business, but are you sure you want a door in the kitchen going to the bathroom instead of off that bedroom with the big closet? You could even swap that closet space with the bathroom...enter the bathroom from the bedroom and go through it to the big closet - master suite.

Hmm...that would cut out access to the bathroom from the study/guest room though.

    Just a thought. :D

The original is unusual in this area for a house that old...even redone...to have two bathrooms.

  2. Hi Sherry - Thanks so much for your interest and comments! I agree that a door between kitchen and bathroom is not ideal, and I have given it much thought. I think it needs to stay there (closed) as a buffer space between the room divider and start of kitchen cabinets. The cabinets can't be butted up against the room divider, and without the door it would just be dead wall space. I plan to leave the door permanently closed, maybe permanently locked. It will just be a visual on the kitchen side. The bath will still open into the "Study/Guest" and serve as the "public/guest" bath. Re the two bathrooms, we thought the same thing. Then we found a door that had been closed up between the kitchen and second (back) bath, and figured out that it had once been a hallway from the kitchen to the back bedroom (did I already post this somewhere? Can't remember without going back through the posts - lol). Anyway, research has shown that the family raised 10 kids in the house, so I guess they had to enclose the back porch and hallway for some more bedrooms and another bathroom!

    1. Edited 2/25/14 to add: We later found out that we were confused about the 10 kids being raised in this house. Their mother was raised in this house, but she raised her family next door (in an even smaller house!).

  3. 10 kids?! Wow...I thought our house was crowded with four. LOL

You and your husband have started out on a interesting journey with this house. I wish I had the patience to tackle something like this.

    Don't forget to have fun!
